The most absurd road in Europe just opened in Belgium

June 11, 2011 by The Initech Staff15 Comments

In lack of a better term we’re gonna call this “the road of shame”. Taking 300,000 Euros from the good old taxpayer, this reworked masterpiece is the new go to example for Belgium’s political corruption.

weird road in belgium

The are 250 signs placed on the sides of the road all warning about “narrowing” and a forest of other traffic signs enforcing speed limits and other Belgium specific traffic laws and all that over a distance of only five kilometers.

On its very first day there were multiple car crashes reported and you can even see some of the traffic signs brought down. Some happy citizens spray painted a love message for the authorities: ARE YOU INSANE?!

What’s even less normal about this whole story is that the proper authorities, the people behind the project had only this to say:

We wanted to widen the road so that trucks can cross, because before it was bordered by trees. We also wanted to avoid a straight road it was encouraging people to drive fast. The work was therefore a necessity.

The police agrees and have released a press note saying that the builders have followed their directions and those of the community.

At least its a decent road. In America we blow taxpayer’s money on wars which are unnecessary and waste billions developing jets to fight the USSR which no longer exists.

The cost of this road is probably about as much money as it costs to train and pay ONE F-16 fighter jet pilot.

This isn’t even a drop in the bucket compared to USA waste.

I couldn’t help but laugh at the insanity. The French love to be different, and they might design such a road, but the Belgians beat them to it this time.

Was that road two-way? Couldn’t be, could it? Nah! But there were signs facing the other direction.

They say a camel is an animal designed by a committee. This road is a camel.

Even Indian roads are better than this !!!! :D
    M shocked !!

Well, it’s not a belgian problem – it’s only a problem in the french-speaking part of belgium. Why do you think the dutch-speaking majority has enough of those ?
The political structure in this banana-republic is very complex. The roads are the responsability of the regions. This means it’s not a belgian problem – but a walloon problem.
Stop yelling at us normal-dutch-speaking belgians (too sad nobody dares to blow up this mess) and push those francophones back to where they belong – to france.

Bob, it’s actually a two-way road (there’s European signaling there indicating who should give way: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road_signs_in_the_Netherlands).

It’s a really dangerous road; it shouldn’t be a 50 Km/h road but a 30 Km/h path. It reminds me of some paths used to access remote country houses.
